We work with sustainable raw materials
The virgin fibres used by Guarro Casas for its production are sourced from responsibly managed forests and other controlled sources, thereby avoiding the deforestation of natural resources. Guarro Casas holds the following certificates to substantiate compliance with the applicable quality and sustainability standards in this area:
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), a forestry management certificate which shows that the pulp used by the company comes from sustainable forests and from a socially responsible production chain, from its origin through to the manufacture of the actual paper.
Certificación PEFC, a forestry certification system that attests to good forestry practices and guarantees that the forestry products are produced in fulfilment of the most stringent environmental, social and ethical standards.
Forestry plantations for industrial uses have increased notably in Europe in recent years, currently occupying a surface area of 44,000 km2, 30% more than in 1950.
This type of young-tree plantations, besides generating new employment and revenue in desert areas, consumes more CO2 than old trees from non-industrial forests.
Besides their sustainable origin, our papers are manufactured with heavy metal-free raw materials whose commercial use is limited. All our papers are produced in a neutral and aqueous base, with a pH of around 7, they are solvent-free and chlorine-free.
Investing in sustainability
Guarro Casas makes ongoing investments related to environmental sustainability. The latest ones are:
Implementation of new technologies in the compressed air system, which has permitted energy savings of around 25%, and replacement of the 6,000 m2 of interior lighting in our industrial premises with low-consumption energy sources.
We apply the rule of the three Rs
Reduction
In energy consumption, through the use of new technologies, water consumption with constant improvement of the installations and a better leverage of raw materials to reduce their consumption.
Reuse
Of the waste generated in the manufacture of paper for its use in new processes. Of the vegetable fibre sludge generated by our plant’s biological waste water treatment plants for external recycling.
Recycling
As for paper, we recycle the cuttings generated in manufacturing, reusing and accounting for 20% of the pulp.
With an active environmental policity
Guarro Casas’ commitment to the environment is also embodied in its ISO 14001 environmental management certification, which identifies and evaluates the environmental risks that may arise in the course of the company’s industrial activity.
Through the application of this standard, the company’s internal procedures address both environmental risk prevention and environmental protection.
In accordance with the principles of the ISO 14001 standard, awareness-raising and training in environmental matters for our personnel are essential to maintaining an environmental management system.
Therefore, our company regularly conducts internal campaigns to promote environmental awareness and to generate sustainable initiatives both in the reduction of ordinary consumption and in the implementation of new measures that further the energy efficiency of its production system.
The company’s regular suppliers are also asked to observe this commitment and must furnish proof of the application of environmental management procedures in their business and products.

Guarro Casas’ upcoming objectives in environmental conservation involve the progressive implementation of CO2 reduction and compensation plans (carbon footprint) as well as support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
